Beer description
The brown one in this duo of house beers at Bierbrasserie Cambrinus in Bruges, but as with the blonde one, I do not believe this is an original beer (and certainly not brewed at the spot - which, as far as I know, was never claimed by the Bierbrasserie to begin with). Probably an alias of some or other standard Van Steenberge beer. Rating from notes of a few years old. Thick and moussy, egg-white, tightly lacing head, clear brownish bronze robe with burgundy hue. Aroma of caramel candy, hazelnut paste, raw red cabbage, cocoa powder, banana, pear, stewed beef, coriander, something sweaty and an unwelcoming whiff of DMS, but less strongly so than in the blonde. Sweet onset, raisins and banana, candied cherry touch even, softish carbo fit for the style, slick caramelly malt sweet body with lightly bitterish toasty edges in the end; finishes with mild leafy hop bitterishness supporting this toasted aspect, but caramel- and residual brown sugary sweetness get the last word. Cliché, sweet dubbel, nothing extraordinary whatsoever and just another sweet and accessible consolidation of the style, but enjoyable enough without any major flaws - better in its respective style than the blonde.
