Beer description
Every beer lover and every German likes to think they are experts on the famous Bavarian Reinheitsgebot (Purity Law) of 1516. I can tell you first hand talking to 1000s of drinkers over the years that less than 20% know the exact ingredients in the law. Less than 5% know the full historical context and recent marketing developments.
The original law said beer can only contain “Barley, Hops, and Water.” The key word is “barley”…..not “malt”…not “grain.”
Well, but, wait a minute…Hefe-Weizen (Wheat beer) is a very old Bavarian style. That’s right. The Bavarians were breaking their own “purity” law the whole damn time since the mid-1500’s. In fact the Dukes of Bavaria even held the Wheat Beer Monopoly so only they could profit from making Hefe-Weizen.
So, next time some uninformed know-it-all tries to lecture you about the purity law, you can let them in on the BS….Bavaria’s Secret.
Our first classic wheat is deliciously drinkable and also a reminder that when it comes to German beer, it was never as pure as Germany’s big industrial brewers want you to believe.
