The end of the 15th century represents a hard time in the Rhineland - economic grievances brought more and more challenges to the residents in addition to numerous other challenges. The Abbey Brauweiler was severely affected by the consequences of a bad harvest in the 1490s. Despite this, Abbot Adam II von Münchrath managed to generate greater profits for the abbey through economic skill and the sale of grain. Adam II proved mercantile sensibility and let finance with the profit among other things the building of a new brewing and Backhauses. This created the basis for a new product that could be sold and financially supported the ongoing monastic operation. This product is of course beer. Bills from the years 1530/31 prove that the barley juice was sold mainly to monastery staff, but also to lay brothers or craftsmen. Not much has changed since nearly 500 years ... or is it?
