Hügu Brauerei - West Coast IPA

Originally, IPAs were brewed by English seafarers with a high percentage of alcohol and lots of hops so that the beer they took with them would survive the long journey to India, which was not the case with the normally hopped Pale Ales. The English IPAs are characterized by a strong bitterness. Gradually, IPAs made the leap across the Atlantic and also gained popularity in the USA. However, many people found the English beers too bitter, which is why fruitier hop varieties were used. While the New England IPA prevailed on the east coast, which is still relatively similar to the English IPAs despite a slightly fruity aroma, the beers in the west became more and more fruity. The West Coast IPA is based on the unique Citra hops, which provide a citrusy base aroma. This is complemented by the herbaceous-flowery splitter Select and the spicy Perle hops. The high-alpha hop variety Nugget provides the central bitterness, even in a West Coast IPA. The Red X malt in combination with a high Pale Ale malt content gives the beer an intense dark red colour.
