Beer description
Smu Sirkka is an unfiltered whole malt beer produced by surface yeast fermentation using smoked crickets. Its taste can be described as fresh, lightly malty and fruity aromatic - without forgetting a slight hop bite and light smokiness.
Once upon a time, three students of gastronomy were given the task of developing a new product from home-made chickpeas. It was a lot to think about, as Finland had already had its first taste of home-made cherries in the form of bread, bars and crisps, among other things. But what kind of cricket product would inspire more than just the open-minded pioneers? Beer, of course! Thus was born Finland's first ale beer flavoured with smoked home-made crickets - Smu Sirkka!
The first version of the product was made by the students themselves, and to their surprise, it was ranked 5/14 in the Helsingin Sanomat review of Helsinki microbrewery beers. Savu Sirka's leap into the future had begun.
The crickets come from the Villa Mangs cricket farm in Karjaa. The beer is now produced in collaboration with the United Gypsies Brewery in Lohja. Smu Sirkka beer is a circular economy at its best, as the crickets eat the mash from the beer production process.
