Superstition - Sun Stone

In order to navigate the seas of Northern Europe, and waters beyond, Viking seafarers used the legendary Sunstone to find the position of the sun on cloudy days. In 2013 a shipwreck off the coast of England turned up a crystal made of lcelandic spar, a type of calcite. Scientists were able to show that this crystal divides light into two separate rays, and when rotated a certain way, the ray of light converge, indicating where the sun is.
