Beer description
Mr Martin’s Fickle Nectarines is a golden barrel aged Australian Wild Ale refermented with 40kg of organically grown Goldmine nectarines from Ravensworth in Murrumbateman, NSW.
Bryan and Jocelyn have a single Goldmine tree on their property and they kept telling me about how wonderful the flavour of the produce is. However, its a tough one to catch because it ripens almost in a day. So basically each year they get a bunch of fruit that needs to be picked and jammed in essentially one day. This fruit is canonically difficult to pick at peak ripeness, allowing a window of a single day, thus this exceptional flavoured varietal is rarely ever grown commercially.
Instead we decided to make this beer together and I left a fermentation vessel down at their place to pick into. Once picked, we drove down to collect the fruit and racked beer onto it for a decently long maceration.
The result is a juicy delight. Creamy fruit expression like a nectarine/apricot rough, airy with sweet ripe candied fruit, nectarines and stonefruit. Orange citrus and toasted biscuits. A dark spice and woody element is present too. The palate is leaner and more focused. Fruit to the forefront, ripe fruit edged by funk that moves to a sweet grilled fruit note. There’s a noticeable acidity to close but it’s balanced by fruit so that it finishes citrusy and clean.
