Description
The building, now home to the Brewery & Grill, was originally built in 1916 for the Monterey Elks Club, which occupied the upper floors with the Beach Theater and two retail outlets on the ground floor. The moose became larger than the location in 1964 and the upper floors were used by the Monterey Chess Club until 2003. The theater operation on the ground floor was continued from 1916 as Regency, Rio and again as Regency Theater until 2005. The building was purchased by the Hill family in 2013 and underwent a significant renovation in upper-level apartments and the Alvarado Street Brewery & Grill on the ground floor, which opened in May 2014. The building has been classified as historically significant as representative of the early twentieth-century Beaux Arts commercial architecture. It is also believed to be the work of noted California architect William H. Weeks.
