Description

The brewery Max Wolf GmbH was from 1885 to mid-December 2009 in the Marienstraße in the south of Karlsruhe. In 1885 Max Wolf from Jöhlingen bought the brewery Ludwig Maisack at Werderstraße 51 and opened his own brewery here on 3 October of the same year. The attached restaurant was for decades the only bar. By buying the neighboring houses and by topping (1897 under the direction of Johannes Schroth) expanded the brewery in the following years. From 1919 the sons Max and Eugen Wolf continued the business. Last but not least, it was probably due to the consistent adaptation to the state of the art in brewing technology that the company, as the smallest brewery in Karlsruhe, survived both the fierce competition of the late 19th century and the economic crises after the two world wars. In 1927 Wolf was the first German brewery to set up a brewing pan with gas heating. With the entry of Alfred Wolf into the company, the brothers founded in 1962 an open trading company (OHG) under the name brewery Max Wolf OHG. The company retained its location at Werderplatz; only the postal address was changed to Marienstraße 38 in 1953. In 1978, the brewery reached a beer output of 15,000 hl. In the year 1983 the transformation into a GmbH with Michael Wolf as managing director took place. After his death in 2000, Jutta Wolf and Ulrich Schulz took over the management. The latter steered the fortunes of the brewery until 2005. After his departure, Regine Wolf briefly continued the brewery. From late 2007 to mid-2012, Jörg Zwally was Managing Director. The brewery Max Wolf GmbH was the last of the more than 30 traditional private breweries in Karlsruhe. Among other things, in order to save the investment for the urgently needed modernization of the bottling plant, Wolf cooperated since 2005 with various breweries. In 2006, the brewery Wolf also gave the beverage delivery for The Fest to Hoepfner. The year 2009 marked the end of the old brewery Wolf at its traditional location in the south of Karlsruhe. The old brewery on Marienstraße was demolished to give way to a new condominium building. On the other hand, the listed inn Wolfbräu on Werderplatz, which was the main bar of the brewery, was preserved. While the central warehouse and brewery administration in Eggenstein had their headquarters, the Wolf Bier was brewed at the Heidelberger brewery and at the brewery Ladenburger in Neuler. A new location in the city was sought, because the Wolfbräu should remain a "Karlsruhe beer" in the future. At the end of 2010, it was announced that negotiations were underway for a property on the grounds of the Dairy Center, which the brewery was to accept after a conversion. In May 2012, these plans were shattered, for reasons of cost, was renounced to a seat in Karlsruhe, the warehouse in Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, which is still used as a temporary storage, should be omitted in the medium term. The Heidelberger brewery now also takes over the distribution of the brand. The considerations to make Wolf Bräu a cooperative were also rejected. The entry in the commercial register was deleted in 2016.
