The Schreckenskammer is one of Cologne’s oldest breweries and was first mentioned in historical records as early as 1442.
The Schreckenskammer has been run by the Wirtz family for four generations. The unique, family-friendly atmosphere that sets our brewery apart from the rest is something you can only experience here!
At the Schreckenskammer, we embrace a cosmopolitan and hospitable culture along with the typical Cologne way of life. “Levve un levve losse” is part of the Cologne way of life, which is lived out especially in the breweries. Breweries are as much a part of Cologne as Carnival. And Carnival, in turn, is also part of the Schreckenskammer. Not only are we die-hard Carnival enthusiasts ourselves, but all the Carnival clubs feel at home here and visit us regularly.
At the “Zur Schreckenskammer” brewery, you’ll find the perfect blend of Cologne’s unique character and beer culture. You can enjoy your Kölsch in a typically rustic pub with old-world charm. We also uphold tradition when it comes to floor care, which is why our open-pored, untreated wooden floor is sprinkled with sand, just as it used to be in the old days.
