Description

The history of Bairds Malt can be traced back to 1823 when Hugh Baird Sr. founded his first brewery, the Great Canal Brewery in Glasgow, with his brother Frank. In 1832 the brothers started their own business as maltsters. After many years, they parted ways, with Frank focusing on the brewery business and Hugh on the malting business. When Hugh Baird Senior retired in 1878, his sons, Hugh Junior and Montague, became sole shareholders in the company, which consisted of two malt houses: Vulcan Maltings in Port Dundas and Springbank. Until the turn of the century, the company was only active in Glasgow. In an effort to expand their operations in Glasgow, Hugh and Montague leased a floor malting plant in Greenwich in 1906, which was purchased in the following years. In 1925, the company needed additional manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand and so it acquired the Witham site and the bottom malting facility, followed by many other bottom malting facilities across the UK. In 1999 Hugh Bairds merged with another successful malt house, Moray Firth Maltings, to create what is now Bairds Malt Ltd. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
