Description

The aspired and declared goal of Felsen Bräu to free itself from oil and gas and instead to switch entirely to wood chips, solar energy and green electricity was achieved in 2007. With this success, the Felsen Bräu wrote "beer history". On May 3, 2007, the Felsen Bräu was certified and recognized as the 1st solar beer brewery in Germany by the TU Munich-Weihenstephan. For the first time, a brewery had managed to ensure that all of the energy required for beer production came from 98% renewable raw materials. This saves Felsenbräu around 140,000 l of heating oil per year. Felsenbräu is also the only brewery in Germany that cools its beer with natural ice. In winter, when the temperatures drop below freezing, a wooden frame is sprayed with water, icicles form. They are chopped off and stored in the basement, where they thaw slowly in summer and cool the storage tanks sustainably. This “natural ice harvest” is unique in Germany.
