Description

Beer has been brewed in Hörde for over 800 years, first by the nuns in the Clarissenstift. A few inns also brewed their own beer, one of which was the Balster inn (Balster Brewery) in Chausseestraße, today's Hermannstraße, which had been brewing its own beer since 1760. In 1910, the brewery was sold to August Stolze (Stolzer August), and brewing was discontinued because no young brewers wanted to take over. Thomas Wüstefeld, a great-great-grandson of Heinrich Balster, has revived the tradition of brewing beer and brews the Hörder Phoenixbier, a dark, drinkable beer that you can only drink here in the house, freshly tapped and with pleasure.
