Description

For centuries, Ebersberg Monastery was known beyond the region as a spiritual and cultural center. In order to feed the pilgrims to St. Sebastian, Duke Ernst granted the monastery the right to serve food and drink on St. Matthew's Day, September 21, 1400. Since the Order of the Knights of Malta took over the monastery in 1781, it has been referred to as a “castle”. The brewery continued to operate after secularization and went through several changes of ownership until it was taken over by Hermann Schmederer, the scion of a Munich brewing family, in 1901. He developed the brewery into one of the most modern country breweries in southern Bavaria. Over the following decades, the pressure on small beer producers increased. Fundamental modernization or even a new building became an incalculable risk. In 1974, beer brewing was discontinued with a heavy heart. On St. Matthew's Day 2019, Schmederer's descendants, Martin with his son Franz, Gerd and Sebastian Otter, revived the Schlossbrauerei Ebersberg brewery. Out of love for beer and with a passion for hops, malt and yeast, they found a recipe that fits in with modern times and ties in with tradition.
