Before TikTok trends, before computers, before television…brave and foolhardy men, women and children risked life and limb to delight and amaze earthbound mortals. In the 1920s, pilots flew around the country, performing stunts and giving rides in their newfangled machines. With few airports, local barns and fields served as their venue, hence the name “barnstorming.” Some of the most outlandish stunts were achieved by aerialists who stepped outside rickety wooden craft to walk along the top biplane wing—in full flight. In a flurry to outdo each other, wingwalkers developed more and more madcap exploits: doing handstands, playing tennis, transferring from one plane to another, even hanging by their teeth!
