Heineken Switzerland is investing a double-digit million amount at its Lucerne location. A new, full-scale “city brewery” is being built on the 38.00-square-meter site of Brewery Eichhof, which serves as the company’s headquarters. Not only will the Eichhof product line be brewed there, but also limited-edition and seasonal specialties. In the future, larger production volumes will be handled in part at the Chur location. At the same time, the headquarters and employees’ office spaces will be modernized. The facility is scheduled to begin operations in 2030.
The cities of Lucerne and Kriens, as well as the LuzernPlus regional association, have signed a memorandum of understanding with Heineken: the vacated land is to be transformed into a residential and lifestyle district. “Eichhof belongs to Lucerne, and that should remain the case in the future. That is why we are investing in a new, full-scale brewery and our headquarters in Lucerne. We are proud to shape this exciting new chapter for Eichhof in dialogue with Lucerne and Kriens,” says Marc Moser, Country Manager of Heineken Switzerland.
Flashback
In 2008, Heineken acquired the Eichhof brewery. About 15,500 people signed a petition against the sale, but the major shareholders approved it. In 2013, Heineken moved bottle bottling operations from Lucerne to its sister brewery, Calanda, in Chur. A residential and commercial district called “Eichhof West” has already been developed on part of the site.
Parallels
In Villach, Carinthia, the Heineken subsidiary Brau Union took a similar approach. The Villach Brewery became the Villach City Brewery. Is this a coincidence? Or a strategy?
