Description

The Ettal Abbey Brewery was founded in 1609 and can look back on 400 years of uninterrupted brewing history. It is one of the oldest companies in our abbey. It is undeniable that the monasteries made a significant contribution to the cultural development of the West. In addition to the outstanding achievements in the field of the humanities, they have also influenced the development of craftsmanship and trade in a variety of ways. The development of western beer brewing is hardly imaginable without the monasteries. Because the monastic breweries mark the transition from home brewing to commercial brewing craftsmanship. On the one hand, the beer in the monasteries was made for a larger group of people, on the other hand, they later gave the beer that was originally made only for the own needs of the monastery community to strangers in their monastery taverns and pilgrim houses.
