Tegernseer to Take Over Hopf Wheat Beer Brewery from Paulaner

A regional reshaping of Bavaria’s beer landscape

With the acquisition of the Miesbach-based wheat beer brewery Hopf, the Herzoglich Bayerische Brauhaus Tegernsee is expanding its portfolio and strengthening its position in the Bavarian wheat beer segment. Tegernsee views Hopf as a natural addition to its range, citing the long-standing regional ties and existing relationships with the local gastronomy sector.

Hopf, a brewery deeply rooted in Miesbach, has been part of the Paulaner Group since 2006. In recent years, however, Paulaner redirected its strategy and focused increasingly on its core brand. Smaller brands were scaled back, leading to a streamlined Hopf assortment. Annual production eventually dropped to around 35,000 hl, reflecting the brand’s declining strategic weight within the group.

For Tegernsee, the acquisition marks a significant reinforcement of its wheat beer offering. Managing Director Christian Wagner highlighted the cultural affinity between the two traditional breweries and described the integration of Hopf as a meaningful long-term step. Existing partnerships with wheat beer specialists such as Erdinger and Schneider would also be complemented in a logical way.

The sale, scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2026, ensures continuity at the Miesbach site. Production will continue unchanged, all jobs remain secure, and Tilo Ruttmann will stay on as managing director.

Paulaner CEO Jörg Biebernick welcomed the move, stating that Hopf would have stronger development prospects under Tegernsee’s ownership.
