Carlsberg continues to surprise with innovations. Now the Danish brewery has literally thought small – and has big plans. Together with the Swedish research institute RISE, the glassblowing company Glaskomponent, and the miniature artist Åsa Strand, Carlsberg has created the world's smallest beer – just twelve millimeters high. The bottle is made of green glass, labeled, and sealed with a crown cap. It contains a drop of non-alcoholic beer – 0.005 centiliters to be exact.
Miniature with an Ulterior Motive
The idea behind the project is a symbolic reminder of conscious consumption. Not a ban, not a finger-wagging – but a wink. It's Carlsberg's most modest idea to date, emphasizes Casper Danielsson, Head of Communications at Carlsberg Sweden.
And no, this isn't an AI joke. The miniature is a true work of craftsmanship. The beer was filled into the tiny bottle using precision capillaries, similar to those used in fiber optic technology. Glaskomponent shaped the miniature vessel, Åsa Strand crafted the cap and label – all in all, precision work with artistic patience and a great deal of skill.
And now a university competition
Carlsberg is launching an unusual challenge: Students in Sweden are invited to beat the experiment – who can create an even smaller beer bottle?
The competition is being organized jointly with the student union of the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH). It is intended to encourage creativity and commemorate Carlsberg's long research tradition.
"We usually deal with big questions," says Lydia Boij, president of the KTH student body. "But sometimes you learn the most when you take the small things seriously." The prizes are 10,000 Swedish kronor and a visit to the Carlsberg research laboratory in Copenhagen.
Small, clear, consistent
The world's smallest beer bottle is not just a technical gimmick, but a charming invitation: to pause, combine responsibility with joy – and perhaps simply put down your next glass of beer a little earlier.
Or, to use Carlsberg's humor: Sometimes less is more. Cheers – in miniature.
