Artist Notes Namazu is a giant catfish from Japanese mythology, said to live deep beneath the earth, and blamed for the earthquakes that shake the land. Whenever it stirs, the ground trembles. To keep it in check, the god Kashima pins it down with the kaname-ishi, a divine stone said to hold the world steady. In our version, Namazu isn’t causing chaos, but slipping deeper into stillness. The illustration shows the giant catfish descending into the depths of the ocean, with the kaname-ishi balanced on its head and Kashima riding calmly atop. Part of Namazu’s tail and the top of Kashima’s body break the surface of the water, while the rest fades into the deep. moment of uneasy peace between the chaos below and the calm above.
