In 2014, Pigeon Hill Brewing Company opened doors in downtown Muskegon with more elbow grease than capital, and more determination than experience. As a testament to love of Muskegon and its history, taproom became a living museum, with lights from historic Muskegon foundries, tables built from lumber era pine, and decorations celebrating Muskegon and its rich brewing history. For two years, the taproom also served as sole production facility, where small 3.5 barrel (110 gallon) brew system ran at capacity to serve thirsty patrons and provide limited kegs to local bars. As demand for beer increased both in the taproom and throughout the region, brewery took a leap of faith and purchased a vacant building one block away. This building, a former Brunswick test facility, won our hearts with its history and character – and its ability to house a much larger production operation. Two years after opening taproom, production commenced on new 20 barrel brewhouse at 441 W. Western, and brewery made the transition from small local brewery to a proud exporter of Muskegon beer throughout all of Michigan.
