And now let us turn to beer:

“Perlenzauber” – the creative beer to kick off the beer advent

Perlenzauber is the creative beer in the KALEA beer advent calendar and creates excitement every year on December 1. This special brew is brewed annually by a different brewery, which means that Perlenzauber tastes different every year and remains a real surprise beer.

Kalea contacts various breweries in the spring to ask if they are interested in brewing Perlenzauber for the current year. The only requirement is that it must be a beer with a higher hop content. Everything else – the recipe, style, and creative interpretation – is left up to the master brewers themselves.

There is a simple reason why Perlenzauber always appears on December 1 in the calendar: many breweries want their beer to be presented either on December 1 or December 24 – the two most important days in the beer advent calendar. These places in the calendar are therefore fixed, and Perlenzauber traditionally opens the month of December, a time for enjoyment.

Perlenzauber Edition 2025

This year, the Kaiser Brewery in Geislingen at the foot of the Swabian Alb in southern Germany was chosen. Master brewer Daniel Giebel opted for a unfiltered Pilsner in his interpretation of Perlenzauber.  His “pearls”: the aromatic hops Chinook and Krush – they give the beer a fruity-fresh bouquet that smells of lemon, grapefruit, and a hint of mango.

The Kumpf family has been brewing high-quality beers in Geislingen an der Steige since 1881. Graduate brewing engineer Christoph Kumpf took over the reins from his father in 2017. His father Wilhelm was very forward-thinking and founded a producers' association more than 30 years ago. Today, the Kaiser Brewery sources 100% of its brewing grain from 28 farmers in the Swabian Alb and Swabian Forest.

After filing for bankruptcy in 2015, an investor from Asia secured the brewery's future. A lot of money was invested and the brewery was continuously modernized. Business picked up again, enabling the brewery to say goodbye to the investor in March this year and start the future with five new, regionally based partners.

For four years, the brewery has been submitting beers to the European Beer Star and winning! It has received four awards so far – one gold, two silver, and one bronze. We can see that success and quality go hand in hand.
