Canned Gueuze – Tilquin Makes It Happen

The world of beer is always on the move. Even in traditional segments, there are always surprises. Just a few weeks ago, the Chimay Trappist brewery made waves by canning some of its beers. Shortly thereafter, of all places, the renowned Gueuzerie Tilquin also embraced the can.

»Petit Gueuze Tilquin«

On June 21, the Belgian gueuzerie, famous for its authentic Lambic beers, unveiled its first canned beer: »Petit Gueuze Tilquin«. The brewery is confident they've launched the world's first geuze* in cans, as they announced on social media. It's a move that's sure to spark conversation in the scene and redefine the boundaries of tradition.

Quality Remains King

Despite the new packaging, Tilquin isn't compromising on the quality or characteristic production process of its gueuze. Petit Gueuze Tilquin undergoes the usual two-month, spontaneous secondary fermentation. The only difference is, it's now in a can instead of a bottle. This step is absolutely typical for the beer style and crucial for developing the deep aromas and fine effervescence that distinguish Lambics.

Consequently, the can merely serves as a modern, protective vessel that guarantees the product's unchanged quality. For lovers of authentic gueuze, this means the proven Tilquin taste is now simply more conveniently packaged.

Petit Gueuze Tilquin is ready to drink, but it also has the potential to develop further, which is also typical for Lambic and Geuze. The beer was canned with the help of Brasserie Minne (Somme-Leuze), with 12,450 cans produced.

A Signal for the Future?

Tilquin's bold move shows that even traditional breweries are willing to explore innovative paths without forgetting their roots. It remains exciting to see if "canned gueuze" will kick off a broader trend in the Lambic world and if other breweries will follow suit

*Note: Both spellings for this beer style are common: Geuze and Gueuze.
