Brewer's Advent Day 4: Zwoenitzer Steinbier

Since 1997, beer has again been brewed in Zwoenitz, a tranquil small town in the middle of the Erzgebirge. After 75 years of abstinence, the old craft tradition of brewing beer was revived there.

Dominik Naumann, owner and master brewer of the Zwoenitz Brewery, took over the family business from his father in 2011 and since then has made it his mission to combine the long brewing tradition of his Saxon homeland with the joy of experimentation of a craft brewer.

Their Steinbier is an ancient type of beer, which was already brewed in the middle ages. Due to its unique style, it has a round and palatable taste, with a pithy caramel character, which is created by adding hot stones to the brew.

The sugar from the malts then caramellize on the hot stones, making the beer quite sweet.
