Brewer's Advent 2023 Day 21: Herrngiersdorfer - Hallertauer Hopfen Cuvee

Castle Brewery

Herrngiersdorf is located in the middle of Bavaria. The small community has less than 1,300 inhabitants, but a stately building, Herrngiersdorf Castle. The brewery from which our today’s beer comes is named after it: Herrngiersdorfer Schlossbrauerei (Castle Brewery).

Hops from ‘Hallertau’

For the modern interpretation of a classic pilsner, the brewers went to the ‘Hallertau’. This region in the heart of Bavaria is considered the largest contiguous hop-growing area in the world. Hop gardens, as the fields are called in Germany, characterize the hilly landscape. The architecturally elaborate hop trellises rise up to seven meters into the sky.

In August, when the hop plants are about to be harvested, the air is fragrant with the essential oils emanating from the hop cones. Hallertau hops are today exported to over 100 countries around the world. Highly specialized hop farms produce more than 30 hop varieties, from powerful high alpha hops to the finest aroma hops.

Best Hops for the Hop Cuvée

Four of the world-famous hop varieties found their way into the Hallertau Hopfen-Cuvée: Perle, Hallertau Tradition, Hallertau Mittelfrüher and Saphir. The result is a wonderfully fragrant, fresh, dry-hopped pilsner.

Enjoy! Cheers!
