ince the end of 2024, all Chouffe beer destined for the American market has been brewed not in Belgium, but in the United States — specifically at Boulevard Brewing in Missouri. The move was confirmed by Belgian brewer Duvel Moortgat, which cited the increased import tariffs imposed by the Trump administration as a key factor behind the decision.
Although Duvel Moortgat operates three breweries in the U.S. for more than two decades — Ommegang in New York, Firestone Walker in California, and Boulevard Brewing in Missouri — these sites have traditionally focused on local craft brands. Until late 2024, all production of Belgian classics like Duvel, Chouffe, and De Koninck took place exclusively in Belgium.
This shift marks a significant strategic move for the Breendonk-based brewery, which aims to cut costs and ensure better availability for American consumers. While the beer may now be brewed on U.S. soil, it remains rooted in Belgian tradition.
Incidentally, AB InBev had already taken this step back in 2012 with the significantly larger German beer brand Beck’s. At the time, around 600,000 hectoliters of beer that had been brewed in Bremen and bottled in St. Louis were replaced by purely American production. Nevertheless, the company continued to advertise the beer as being of German origin, which led to a massive damages lawsuit. In the end, AB InBev was ordered to pay up to 50 USD to each affected consumer.
