Dutch one-two finish at the World Beer Sommelier Championship

Dutch one-two finish at the World Beer Sommelier Championship

A dash of theater, a shot of expertise, and a whole lot of passion for beer—that's how you could sum up the eighth World Beer Sommelier Championship. On September 14, 2025, the Doemens Academy in Munich crowned Léon Rodenburg of the Netherlands as the new world champion.

The Stage Is Set for Beer

93 participants from 18 nations and four continents came this year to prove their skills. They brought with them months of training, honed senses, and the hope of taking home the title.

The preliminary rounds required a deft touch. Identifying flavors, determining beer styles, and distinguishing subtle nuances were tasks that have made many a professional break out in a sweat. Those who made it to the semifinals had to compete in a knockout system.

A Thrilling Final

Six finalists eventually faced off against each other. Their task was to present a randomly assigned beer: describe it sensorially, pair it with food, and weave in knowledge and emotion.

Léon Rodenburg chose—or rather, was assigned by lot—the La Trappe Tripel, a Dutch Trappist beer. Whether it was coincidence or a stroke of luck, it was the perfect beer for the perfect sommelier. With confidence, charm, and a clear presentation, he captivated both the jury and the audience. The fact that his compatriot, Dennis Kort, also took second place made the Dutch triumph complete. Third place went to Oliver Klamminger from Austria.

In Conclusion

A Dutch victory in Munich—in sports, that would be fuel for heated pub debates. In the world of beer, however, the best presentation counts, not nationality. And perhaps that is exactly the appeal of this World Championship.

So, here's to Léon Rodenburg, and to the next beer. Do as the sommeliers do: first look, then smell, taste with small sips, savor the aftertaste, and finally, enjoy it mindfully.
